J.B. Chicoine: Novelist

I just changed my header title from Aspiring Novelist…Practicing Writer to Novelist & Practicing Writer. I’ve finally decided to own up to it.

I’m a novelist, and I have completed novels to prove it. And they’re good, and not just my family and friends say so!

And yes, I am also a practicing writer—don’t you just love the ambiguousness of that statement?

  1. The power of language! I believe in all sincerity that you just changed your future when you took that step. Well done.

  2. Nah... it's like being a doctor or a lawyer.

  3. JB...I've noticed your previous header before and restrained myself from saying you're already a novelist (and an excellent one!) So I'm *delighted* to see that you've made this huge mental leap of acceptance...Mischief is 100% correct when she (he?) says "you've just changed your future!"

  5. You ARE a novelist! Say it loud and proud. :)

I am a procrastinator today. I keep meaning to start writing but it's a huge revision and I am a bit scared! Soon, soon...

  6. Bryan, A ‘lapsed revisionist,’ indeed—and a clever one at that! I think the term ‘novelist’ compared to ‘revisionist’ is more easily grasped by others, but the terms are inextricable. Let’s face it, “I’m a novelist” elicits odd enough looks. And we all lapse, that’s part of the gig.

Lisa, Your words hold a great deal of weight with me, and hearing your confidence in me makes it feel all the more real. Thank you.

Andrew, hehehe—and here I thought it was more like being a psychologist! But, you’re right, it is like being a doctor or a lawyer…or a shipwright…or a time traveler…
…and thanks so much for stopping in! :)

Judy, Thanks for your kind words. Yeah, I guess the change in my thinking has come as a result of rewriting two novels this summer. Whereas I hadn’t a clue about writing novels when I started out, now I have enough confidence in all that I’ve learned—not just the rules/guidelines, but the application. Wow! The feeling of knowing how to fix something! That has made all the difference.

Scott, :) You, of all people, know what a leap this is for me! Thanks!

Jayne I AM A NOVELIST! :) Sounds even more real today! :)

I don’t know what feels like a bigger project, starting a novel, or huge revisions. In reality, probably starting a new project—but in our minds…well, you know what imaginations we have. We sure know how to make things bigger and scarier that reality! All the best to you on your revision—once you get going, you’ll have a blast! Imagine that!

  7. Wow! And all this time I thunk you were tryin' to do it and you had already done it!

  8. yeah, Jerry, I'm sort of unpredictable, like gray, with all the subtle nuances...jut when you think it's one thing, it's another...

  9. I do like it, and, yes, it's time I owned up to it too. I think I'll remove "aspiring" from my profile. The hell with that. It's like putting "writer" on your tax return for occupation. That felt good too.

    Thanks!!

  10. A true Renaissance Woman no matter how you define it!

  11. Yvonne, Why is owning up to it so difficutl for some of us? Even with my painting, I can't tell you how long it took me to say, "I'm and artist." And once I said it, you know what? No one has challenged me on it!

Sharon--that is such a sweet thing for you to say. That makes my day! :)

  12. Domey, Thanks. I gotta say, it feels good! :)

  13. Ooo, I like the way it looks, too! Very nice, and what a great realization to come to!

  14. Thank you Michelle! I have been coming to all sorts of realizations lately! I just love this writing gig!

  17. I missed this last month...but noticed the title change today. Good for you! You are a novelist...and...aren't all writers practicing? Perfect.

  18. Liza, as long as we're writing, we're practicing! It's as if we can't help but improve at the same time! :)
